What Is Real
How do we know what is real? This dig starts with a simple one, how old things are and how we can tell. Then it follows the money behind the doubt. Then it turns around, toward Plato’s cave, consciousness, quantum physics, and what the mind can and cannot do.
On this page
This is my place to dig into the stuff that matters. I pick a hard question, read the sources myself, follow the money, and write down what I find in plain words.
I could be wrong, so everything is linked. Check me. All the digs are at The Digs. Next door: Ethics, on Gaza and preserving life.
The short versionSixty seconds
- Carbon dating works on things that were once alive and are younger than about 55,000 years. Inside that range it is the best tool we have, and it is checked against tree rings, lake mud, cave stone and coral, one year at a time.
- It does not give the age of the Earth. Nobody serious says it does. That job belongs to other clocks, and they agree with each other: 4.54 billion years.
- The attacks from groups like ICR and Answers in Genesis mostly knock down a version of carbon dating that scientists do not use, or point to problems that scientists themselves found, published and fixed.
- Everybody here has a money motive. So ask the better question: who gets paid only if the answer comes out one way?
- You can believe God made the world and accept all of this. Many Christian physicists and geologists do. Several are linked below.
The methodHow carbon dating works
After about nine half lives less than a fifth of one percent is left. That is why the method stops near 55,000 years, and why it could never say “millions” about anything.
Willard Libby worked this out in 1949 and won the Nobel Prize in 1960. His first tests were on things with known dates, such as wood from Egyptian tombs. It matched.
A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.Proverbs 11:1
The honest answerIs it the best thing we have?
For its own job, yes. For other jobs, no, and nobody claims otherwise.
Where it is strong
- Bone, wood, charcoal, cloth, seeds, shell, up to about 55,000 years
- Usually good to within a few decades for the last several thousand years
- Checked against things we can count by hand, year by year
- Run blind in rival labs around the world that would love to catch each other out
Where it is weak, and scientists say so
- Old carbon in water. Shellfish and river animals take in ancient carbon from limestone and look too old. Known since 1963. Corrected for.
- Contamination. A trace of modern carbon makes very old samples look younger. This sets the 55,000 year ceiling.
- The sky is not steady. Carbon 14 in the air has risen and fallen. That is why every date is calibrated.
- Our own mess. Coal smoke and 1950s bomb tests changed the air. Both are measured and accounted for.
How the calibration is done
Scientists did not assume the past was steady. They went and measured it. The current standard is called IntCal20.
| Natural calendar | How it is counted | How far back |
|---|---|---|
| Tree rings | One ring a year, matched tree to tree, each ring carbon dated | 13,900 years |
| Lake Suigetsu, Japan | One thin layer of mud a year, with leaves trapped inside | about 50,000 years |
| Cave stone and coral | Dated two ways at once, by carbon and by uranium | 55,000 years |
| Greenland and Antarctic ice | One layer of snow a year, counted by hand and by machine | 60,000 counted, 800,000 in total |
A tree ring does not care about anyone’s theory. Neither does a layer of mud. They all tell the same story.
Past the limitHow we date things older than 55,000 years
Carbon 14 is a fast clock. It runs down in a few tens of thousands of years, like a kitchen timer. For older things you need slower clocks, and nature supplies them. The idea is the same every time: an unstable parent atom turns into a stable daughter atom at a fixed pace. Count both and you know how long the clock has been running. Think of an hourglass. Sand on top, sand on the bottom, and a neck that never changes width.
| Clock | What it dates | Reach |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon 14 | Things that were once alive | to 55,000 years |
| Luminescence | The last time a grain of sand saw sunlight, or a pot was fired | to about 300,000 years |
| Uranium to thorium | Coral and cave stone | to about 500,000 years |
| Potassium to argon | Volcanic ash and lava. Half life 1.25 billion years | 100,000 years to billions |
| Rubidium to strontium | Ancient rock, Moon rock, meteorites. Half life 49 billion years | tens of millions to billions |
| Uranium to lead | Zircon crystals. Two clocks in one: 4.47 billion and 704 million years | a million years to the age of the Earth |
The three fair questions, answered
“How do you know how much daughter was there at the start?”
Good question, and geologists asked it first. Two answers. Zircon crystals take in uranium when they form but push lead out, so the lead clock starts at zero. And the isochron method measures several minerals from one rock and plots them on a line. The slope gives the age and the line itself tells you how much daughter was there at the start. Nothing has to be assumed.
“What if atoms leaked in or out?”
Then the clocks disagree, and that is how you catch it. Uranium gives two separate clocks inside the same crystal. If they match, nothing leaked. If they do not, the sample is thrown out. Rocks are also dated by several different elements at once. Leaks would not fool them all by the same amount.
“What if decay ran faster in the past?”
These clocks run on three different kinds of decay with different physics. To keep them in agreement, each would have had to speed up by a different amount, in step, and then the heat would have melted the planet. And we can look at the past directly: the exploding star seen in 1987, 168,000 light years away, shows decay running at today’s pace.
Tested against a date we already know
Checks that have nothing to do with atoms
- Coral as a calendar. Coral lays down one thin line a day and one thick band a year. Modern coral shows about 365 lines a year. Coral that the clocks date to about 400 million years old shows about 400. Astronomers had already worked out, from the Moon’s pull, that the Earth’s spin slows a little every century, and that days were shorter back then by just that much. Two fields that never talk to each other, one answer. Wells, Nature, 1963
- The ocean as a tape measure. The Atlantic is about 5,000 kilometres wide and opening at about 2.5 centimetres a year. Divide one by the other and you get roughly 200 million years. Rock dredged from the seafloor dates to zero at the middle ridge and close to that at the edges.
- Hawaii as a conveyor belt. The Pacific seafloor slides northwest over a hot spot at a few centimetres a year, and the islands get older in a row: the Big Island is still erupting, Kauai is about 5 million years old, 500 kilometres away. The speed from the rock dates matches the speed from GPS.
The strength of all this is not any one clock. It is that clocks built on different physics, plus coral, ice, mud and a spreading ocean, were free to disagree and did not.
The attacksSeven mistakes, and what is true
I am not calling anyone a liar. I am listing claims that have been checked and did not hold up. Each one links to the evidence, and where I can, to the ministry’s own words.
“Carbon dating is how they get millions of years.”
It is not, and it cannot be. The method runs out at 55,000 years. Dinosaur bones and rock layers are dated with the other clocks above. Attacking carbon dating to defend a young Earth is aiming at the wrong target.
“A living snail was dated at 27,000 years old.”
True, and scientists are the ones who found it and explained it, in the journal Science, in 1984. The snails lived in spring water full of dissolved ancient limestone. That is the old carbon effect, known since 1963 and corrected for. A known limit written on the label is not a hidden flaw.
“There is carbon 14 in coal and diamonds, so they must be young.”
This was the headline of ICR’s RATE project. Every machine has a noise floor, like the hiss of a speaker turned all the way up. Radiocarbon labs put diamonds in their machines on purpose, to measure that hiss. The faint signal is the machine and traces of contamination, not the diamond. The clearest rebuttal was written by Kirk Bertsche, a Christian physicist who helped build these machines.
“Lava from Mount St. Helens in 1986 was dated at 350,000 years.”
A creation geologist sent ten year old rock to a lab whose own paperwork said its equipment could not measure anything younger than two million years. The sample also held old crystals carried up from deep below. Weighing a letter on a truck scale and getting the wrong answer says nothing about the scale.
“It assumes carbon 14 in the air was always the same.”
Libby assumed that in 1949. By the 1960s tree rings had shown otherwise, and every date since has been calibrated. The objection is sixty years stale.
“Radioactive decay ran a million times faster during the Flood.”
This is ICR’s answer to all the older clocks. Their own team admitted the problem: that much decay in one year releases enough heat to boil the oceans and melt the crust, and enough radiation to kill everything on the Ark. ICR lists this as unresolved on its own website. Their answer so far is that God must have removed the heat by a miracle, which is no longer a scientific claim.
The conclusion is fixed before the evidence is looked at.
Answers in Genesis requires its staff to sign a statement of faith that says no evidence in any field “can be valid if it contradicts” their reading of Scripture. Whatever else that is, it is not research. A scientist who signed the mirror image of that statement would be laughed out of the room, and should be.
He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.Proverbs 18:17
Follow the moneyWho gets paid, and for what
Young earth ministries often say scientists defend old ages to protect their grants. Fair enough. Let us look at everyone’s books. Theirs are public, because they are tax exempt.
| Answers in Genesis, yearly revenue (latest IRS filing) | $73.5 M |
| Institute for Creation Research, yearly revenue (2025). 83% is donations | $10.4 M |
| Ken Ham, chief executive pay and benefits | $291,000 |
| Ark Encounter theme park, built | $100 M+ |
| ICR Discovery Center, Dallas, built | $37.8 M |
| Creation Museum, Kentucky, built | $27 M |
| ICR’s RATE project, all donor money | about $2 M |
The product is doubt. The income is donations, tickets, books, videos and homeschool curriculum. If carbon dating is right, the product has no market.
| Who pays | Grants, museums, builders, police, wine and art fraud cases |
| Does the lab earn more for an old date? | No |
| What makes a scientist famous? | Proving the textbook wrong |
| Who bets real money on old Earth geology? | Every oil company on Earth |
Scientists have money motives too: grants, jobs, pride. But the payoff in science runs toward overturning things. Anyone who could show radiometric dating is broken would win a Nobel Prize and never pay for lunch again.
The taxpayer’s share of the Ark
The test that settles it
For the love of money is the root of all evil.1 Timothy 6:10 · it applies to laboratories and ministries alike
A note for ChristiansYou do not have to choose
The young Earth reading became a test of faith in America only in the 1960s. Long before Darwin, Augustine warned Christians not to talk nonsense about the natural world in the name of Scripture, because unbelievers who knew better would then laugh at the Gospel too. Many believers who date rocks for a living see no conflict at all.
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Psalm 19:1For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.
Romans 1:20One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:8It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
Proverbs 25:2If creation is God’s handiwork, then tree rings and atoms are his testimony as well. A God who planted false ages in the rocks would be a deceiver, and that is not the God of the Bible.

The bigger questionShadows on a cave wall
About 2,400 years ago Plato told a story. People sit chained in a cave, facing the back wall. Behind them is a fire, and between the fire and their backs other men carry puppets. All the prisoners ever see is shadows, so they take the shadows for the world. They hand out prizes to whoever is best at predicting the next one. One prisoner gets free, turns around, sees the fire, climbs out, and is blinded by the sun. When he comes back down to tell the others, they laugh at him and would kill him if they could.
The fight over the age of the Earth is a shadow fight. A number on the wall, 6,000 or 4.5 billion, with people behind us holding up the puppets, and as the money section shows, selling tickets to the show.
Turn around and the questions get much bigger. Why is there anything at all? And the strangest fact any of us knows: somebody is home. You are not only a body that reacts. There is something it is like to be you, to see red, to grieve, to love your child. A 6,000 year old Earth does not explain that. A 4.5 billion year old Earth does not explain it either. So I kept digging, below.
That is where the real mystery lives, and it is where faith and philosophy have always done their best work. It is a poor trade to spend a life defending a number and never look at the light.
Turn aroundSomebody is home. But where?
Here is the strangest fact you know. There is something it is like to be you. Red looks like something. Grief weighs something. Science can trace every signal in your brain and still cannot say why any of it comes with an inner light instead of running in the dark. The philosopher David Chalmers named this the hard problem, and asked it in one line: why should physical processing give rise to a rich inner life at all?
Is it even inside your head?
View one: the brain makes it
The standard view, with real evidence behind it.
- Anesthesia switches you off. Coffee, wine and a blow to the head all change who is home.
- Damage one spot and you lose faces. Another spot, and you lose words.
- Cut the bridge between the two halves of the brain and each half acts like it has a mind of its own.
View two: the brain receives it
Older than it sounds. William James of Harvard argued it in 1898.
- Smash a radio and the music stops. That does not prove the music was made inside the radio.
- Every fact on the left fits a receiver just as well as a generator.
- James called it the transmissive function. Aldous Huxley called the brain a reducing valve. Some physicists went further and said mind comes first.
Nobody has settled this. Anyone who tells you it is settled, in either direction, is selling something. What I can tell you is that the people who built modern physics did not think the question was silly.
The experiment that broke common sense
Fire electrons at a wall with two slits in it, one electron at a time. On the screen behind, they pile up in stripes. Stripes are what waves make, when a wave goes through both slits and overlaps with itself. So each single electron somehow went through both.
Now put a detector at the slits to see which one it really goes through. The stripes vanish. You get two plain bands, as if the electrons were little bullets all along. The act of finding out changes what happens. Richard Feynman said this one experiment holds “the only mystery” of quantum mechanics.
The ways physicists have tried to tie it to mind
| Idea | Who | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Consciousness finishes the measurement | John von Neumann, Eugene Wigner (Nobel 1963) | A minority view. Wigner himself backed away from it late in life. |
| Mind is quantum events in the brain’s own scaffolding | Sir Roger Penrose (Nobel 2020), Stuart Hameroff | Bold and testable. Most physicists say the brain is too warm and wet. A few recent lab results keep it alive. |
| The universe needs observers to be real | John Wheeler, who taught Feynman | “It from bit.” A serious idea nobody knows how to test. |
| Mind is a basic ingredient of nature, like mass or charge | Panpsychism. Galen Strawson, Philip Goff, and in his own way Schrödinger | Taken seriously again in philosophy departments. |
| Consciousness is how information is woven together | Giulio Tononi, Christof Koch | A leading theory in neuroscience, and hotly fought over. |

The people who kept asking
I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness.
Max Planck · father of quantum theory · 1931Consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms. For consciousness is absolutely fundamental.
Erwin Schrödinger · Nobel Prize 1933It was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way without reference to the consciousness.

John Archibald WheelerThe stuff of the world is mind stuff.
Sir Arthur Eddington · 1928 · the man who proved Einstein rightThe universe begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine.
Sir James Jeans · 1930We are not required to think of productive function only; we are entitled also to consider permissive or transmissive function.
William James · Harvard · 1898 · on the brain and thoughtThe most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.
Albert Einstein · 1930Man is but a reed, the most feeble thing in nature; but he is a thinking reed.
Blaise Pascal · PenséesThe unexamined life is not worth living.
Socrates · at his trial, 399 BCFor in him we live, and move, and have our being.Acts 17:28 · Paul in Athens, quoting a Greek poet to Greek philosophers
Read that verse again next to Planck. Paul did not tell the philosophers that mind lives inside matter. He told them all of it lives inside Mind. Genesis says man became a living soul when God breathed into dust. The oldest claim of the faith is that consciousness came first and the dust came second. Quantum physics has not proved that. It has made it a respectable thing to wonder about again.
Mind over matterWalking through walls
Every culture tells of people who did the impossible by mastery of the mind. Tibetan and Taoist masters said to pass through rock. Indian yogis whose ancient handbook, the Yoga Sutras, lists powers like walking on water as things that show up along the way. And the Bible: the risen Christ standing among the disciples “the doors being shut” (John 20:26), and Peter walking on the sea until he looked at the waves and doubted.
What should an honest digger do with that? Sort it into three piles.
Pile one: measured in a lab
- The monks. Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard wired up monks practicing tummo, inner fire meditation, in the Himalayas. They dried wet sheets on their bare backs in a cold room. A later study measured their core body temperature climbing into fever range at will. Nature, 1982 · PLoS ONE, 2013
- Placebo. In a Texas trial, surgeons cut open knees and did nothing. Those patients improved as much as the ones who got the real procedure. In another study, a sugar pill worked even when patients were told it was a sugar pill. Belief is a drug. New England Journal of Medicine, 2002 · PLoS ONE, 2010
- The immune system. Volunteers trained in breathing and cold exposure were injected with a bacterial toxin. They produced more adrenaline than a first bungee jump and had far fewer symptoms than the untrained group. The textbooks said that system was out of our control. PNAS, 2014
- The brain rewires. Thought changes the organ doing the thinking. What you attend to, you become. PNAS, 2000
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.
Proverbs 23:7Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Romans 12:2Pile two: claimed, never shown
Nobody has ever walked through a wall under conditions where cheating was ruled out. People have tried hard to find it. The CIA and the US Army spent about $20 million over twenty years on psychic research, the Stargate Project. One Army general, Albert Stubblebine, truly believed he could pass through his office wall and kept running at it. He kept hitting it. The program was shut down in 1995 after reviewers found nothing the government could use. The CIA’s declassified Stargate files
That is why I do not sneer at the locked room in John 20. If it happened, it was not a trick of technique that a monk could learn. It was the Author stepping through his own page. A miracle is by definition the thing the clocks and the odds cannot produce. That is what the word means.
Pile three: sold to you
So can the mind shape reality?
It shapes your body, measurably. It shapes your brain, physically. It shapes your life, because a person who believes he can acts, and action moves the world. Faith the size of a mustard seed has in fact moved mountains, with shovels, in the hands of people who would not quit. Whether mind reaches further than that, into matter directly, is an open question that honest people should keep open, without paying anyone for the answer.
If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.Mark 9:23
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.1 Corinthians 13:12 · Paul, who knew his Plato
So test the dates, because truth matters and a just weight is God’s delight. Then put the ruler down. The weightier matters were never how old the ground is. They are what we do while we stand on it: do justly, love mercy, and preserve life.
