Every life. Palestinian, Israeli, anyone’s. That is what this page is about. People can argue over the labels. Nobody should argue over that.
On this page
Why this page exists
This is my place to dig into the stuff that matters. I pick a hard question, read the sources myself, follow the money, and write down what I find in plain words.
I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.
Deuteronomy 30:19
The principleThe right thing is preserving lives
I started this page asking whether it is genocide. I ended up somewhere simpler. Whatever a court eventually calls it, tens of thousands of civilians are dead, most of a territory’s homes and hospitals are destroyed, and hostages were taken and killed. The Genocide Convention, the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute were all written for one reason: to keep human beings alive.
The test I use. Does this act preserve life or destroy it? I ask it of everyone: to the Hamas-led massacre and hostage-taking of 7 October 2023, which UN investigators found to be war crimes, and to the conduct of the war in Gaza since, which is the subject of most of what follows because of its scale and because it is still being supplied with American weapons.
Hunger and medicine as weapons: the record
You do not need a bomb to end a life. You can close a gate. Here is what the agencies that count these things have put on the record, each one linked.
11 weeks
of total blockade from 2 March 2025. No food, no fuel, no medicine allowed in
Famine
officially confirmed in Gaza on 22 August 2025. The first ever declared in the Middle East
1,400
people killed while trying to reach food, by the UN’s count, in about two months
1,092
patients died waiting for permission to leave for treatment, July 2024 to November 2025
Food
The gate was shut. On 2 March 2025 Israel stopped all aid entering Gaza. For eleven weeks almost nothing crossed. UN Human Rights Office
Famine was confirmed. The IPC is the world’s official hunger monitor, the same body that calls famines in Sudan and Somalia. On 22 August 2025 it confirmed famine in Gaza Governorate: more than half a million people starving, with at least 240 already dead from malnutrition, over 100 of them children. IPC report · World Health Organization · UNICEF
People were shot reaching for food. When aid restarted it was handed to a new armed operation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, in place of the UN. The UN counted nearly 1,400 people killed and more than 4,000 wounded while seeking food, 859 of them around those sites. Human Rights Watch called the killings war crimes. UN experts · Human Rights Watch
It is not over. After the ceasefire of October 2025 more food got in and the famine eased. But as of mid 2026, 1.2 million people, 59% of Gaza, were still at crisis level hunger or worse, more than 100,000 children under five need treatment for malnutrition, and the IPC expects it to get worse again by December. UN humanitarian office, July 2026 · World Food Programme
Medicine
The hospitals. The World Health Organization says 94% of Gaza’s hospitals have been damaged or destroyed and more than 1,700 health workers killed. WHO, attacks on health care
The way out. Before the war 50 to 100 patients a day left Gaza for treatment. In the first two years of the war only 7,802 were let out in total. More than 18,500 are still waiting, and 1,092 died on the list. UN News · Inkstick
The supplies. As of 2026 the UN still reports shortages of insulin, dialysis supplies, heart catheters and basic diagnostic equipment, with one cargo crossing left open. UN humanitarian office, April 2026
What Israel says, and what the US government found
Israel denies there was a famine, disputes the IPC’s method, and says shortages were caused by Hamas stealing aid and by the UN failing to distribute it. The Israeli army has said Hamas takes up to a quarter of what comes in. But an internal review by the US government’s own aid agency looked at 156 reported cases of lost or stolen American supplies and found no evidence of systematic theft by Hamas. Less than one percent was lost to any cause. The State Department disputed that review and said it had video proof, which it did not release. CNN · ABC News · the rebuttal, Jerusalem Post
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink … sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Matthew 25:42-43
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.
Proverbs 25:21
Starving civilians as a method of war is a crime under the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute, whatever else this war is called. It is the charge on the ICC arrest warrants.
What this page is. I am one private citizen. I gathered these public sources, with help from an AI research assistant (Claude), and wrote down what I found. It is not a verdict, and no court has ruled yet. The credibility scores are my own judgment and I explain how I arrived at them. I have linked the strongest arguments against my view too. Read them and make up your own mind.
A note for ChristiansWhat scripture asks of us here
Many American Christians have been taught that faith requires unconditional support for whatever the modern State of Israel does. Scripture does not say that. A government founded in 1948 is not the covenant, and the Bible’s own pattern is the opposite of unconditional support: the prophets were sent to hold Israel’s rulers to account, precisely because God’s standard does not bend for anyone.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Micah 6:8
The prophets, to the rulers of their own nation
When ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood … cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
Isaiah 1:15-17
But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Amos 5:24
And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.
2 Samuel 12:7 · a prophet, to Israel’s greatest king
Rescue those who are being led away to death! … If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this,” doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it?
Proverbs 24:11-12
Christ, to everyone
Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matthew 25:40 · of the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, the prisoner
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Matthew 5:9
So God created man in his own image.
Genesis 1:27 · every child in Gaza, every hostage, every soldier
Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you.
Matthew 5:44
And a warning, to Christians
Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. … Boast not against the branches … Be not highminded, but fear.
Romans 11:1, 18, 20 · Paul, to Gentile believers
What this note does not say. It does not say the Jewish people are rejected by God, or that this war is a judgment on a faith. For centuries “they rejected Christ” was the excuse for persecuting Jews, and Paul forbids that boast in the passage above. The charge on this page is against the conduct of a government and those who arm it. It is measured the way the Hebrew prophets measured their own kings: does it do justly, does it love mercy? Many of the bravest voices on this page are Jewish and Israeli. Palestinian Christians, some of the oldest churches on earth, are among the dead in Gaza.

Psalm 82:3-4
Know it when you see itGenocide is not only killing
Most people picture gas chambers or machetes. The law is wider than that. The 1948 Convention lists five acts, any one of which is genocide when done with intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, in whole or in part. Only the first is direct killing.
a
Killing members of the group
The one everyone recognizes. Rwanda, 1994. Srebrenica, 1995.
b
Causing serious bodily or mental harm
Torture, mutilation, rape, terror. Courts have held that sexual violence alone can qualify.
c
Inflicting conditions of life calculated to destroy
The slow way. It needs no bullets. More on this below.
d
Preventing births
Forced sterilization, separation of the sexes, destruction of maternity and fertility care.
e
Taking the children
Forcibly transferring a group’s children to another group, so the group ends with this generation.
The slow method: how to destroy a people without shooting them
Article II(c) exists because the men who wrote the Convention had just watched it done. A population can be killed by controlling what reaches it.
FoodBlockade, siege, burning crops, blocking aid trucks, shooting at people collecting flour. Hunger kills the youngest and oldest first.
WaterCut the pipes, the power to the pumps, and the fuel for desalination. People drink what is left, and disease does the rest.
MedicineDestroy hospitals, detain the doctors, refuse medical evacuations, block anaesthetic, insulin and incubator fuel. Survivable wounds become fatal.
ShelterLevel the housing. Exposure, winter and crowding finish what the bombs began.
DisplacementMarch people from place to place, into zones with no water or sanitation. The death march is the oldest tool there is.
Sanitation and powerSewage in the streets, no refrigeration, no clean surfaces: cholera, polio, hepatitis.
They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger.
Lamentations 4:9 · Jeremiah, on the siege of Jerusalem
It has been done this way before
The Herero and Nama, 1904 to 1908. German forces drove them into the Omaheke desert and sealed the waterholes.
The Armenians, 1915. Deported on foot into the Syrian desert without food or water. Most deaths were from the march itself.
Ukraine, 1932 to 1933. The Holodomor: grain seized, villages blacklisted, borders closed so the starving could not leave.
The Warsaw Ghetto, 1940 to 1942. An official ration of under 200 calories a day. Tens of thousands died of hunger and typhus before the deportations began.
Cambodia, 1975 to 1979. Cities emptied into the countryside; more died of starvation, overwork and untreated illness than by execution.
This is why the big reports look at supplies and not only at bombs. Human Rights Watch wrote 179 pages about one thing, water: the pipes that were shut off, the power cut to the pumps, the fuel blocked from the desalination plants, the repair parts turned back at the border, and the people who died from thirst and dirty water as a result. Physicians for Human Rights Israel did the same with hospitals and doctors. The ICC arrest warrants are about food. Each one proves its case without counting a single bullet.
What separates these acts from the ordinary horror of war is intent: that the conditions were imposed in order to destroy the group, not as a side effect of fighting. That is the element the dispute is about, and why what leaders say matters so much. Text of the Convention: UN (PDF).
IntentWhat those in power said
Intent is proved mostly from the words of people with authority over the campaign. This page therefore records statements by officials and commanders, which is what the courts weigh.
Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, 9 October 2023: announced a complete siege, with no electricity, food, water or fuel, and said Israel was fighting “human animals”. Cited by the ICJ in its January 2024 order.
President Isaac Herzog, 12 October 2023: said an “entire nation” was responsible for the attack. Also cited by the ICJ. Herzog says he was misquoted and that he also said civilians are not targets.
Prime Minister Netanyahu invoked the biblical command to remember Amalek; his office says it referred to Hamas alone.
Ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir have repeatedly called for withholding aid and for the “emigration” of Gaza’s population.
This page does not collect clips of private citizens saying ugly things. Such clips exist in every country at war; they prove what those individuals think and nothing about a people, and using them that way is the same reasoning this page condemns: holding an “entire nation” responsible. The honest measure of public opinion is a poll, with its caveats:
The same society produced B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel (sources 09 and 10), reservists who refused to serve, and hostage families who filled the streets demanding an end to the war. Israelis are among the most important witnesses on this page.
The ledgerFourteen sources, numbered and rated
Each source is scored from 1 to 5 on three things, for a total out of 15:
Evidence Did they publish their method and proof? Independence How far are they from the parties to the conflict? Standing How much legal or professional authority do they carry?
Every entry also lists the main criticism made of it. A high score means the source deserves to be taken seriously. It does not mean the case is proven.

UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry
September 2025 · second report June 2026 · chair Navi Pillay, former ICTR judge and UN rights chief
Concluded Israel is committing genocide and failing to prevent it, finding four of the five genocidal acts in the Convention, with intent. A June 2026 report found deliberate targeting of children. The most formal legal finding to date. The same commission found Hamas responsible for war crimes on 7 October.
Criticism: created by the UN Human Rights Council with an open-ended mandate Israel and the US call one-sided; Israel did not cooperate.
The earliest formal UN-mandated report to conclude there were reasonable grounds to believe the threshold of genocide had been met.
Criticism: Israel and the United States regard her as biased and cite past statements; barred from entering Gaza, so reliant on others’ field data. An individual expert, not a tribunal.

Amnesty International
December 2024
A book-length investigation: more than 200 interviews, satellite imagery, verified video, and analysis of statements by Israeli officials. Concluded Israel has committed and is committing genocide.
Criticism: Amnesty’s own Israeli section dissented from the conclusion; critics say it stretched the legal test for intent.
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)
December 2024
These are doctors who were there, not lawyers. Their report records what their own teams saw in Gaza’s hospitals over fourteen months, and describes signs of ethnic cleansing and the destruction of the conditions of life.
Criticism: first-hand witness rather than legal analysis; leaves the formal label to courts.
A century-old federation of 180-odd national rights groups; has characterized the campaign as genocide and amplifies its member organizations’ findings.
Criticism: largely relies on members’ and others’ field evidence rather than its own.
Israel’s best-known human-rights organization, accusing its own government. A finding made against the accuser’s own national interest is the hardest kind to dismiss as partisan.
Criticism: the Israeli government calls it a politically marginal, foreign-funded group; it has long opposed the occupation.
A legal-medical analysis by Israeli doctors documenting the systematic dismantling of Gaza’s health system: attacks on hospitals, blocked evacuations, and the killing and detention of medical staff.
Criticism: same as B’Tselem; Israel says hospitals were used by Hamas for military purposes.

Omer Bartov, Amos Goldberg, Raz Segal, William Schabas, Melanie O’Brien and others. Bartov and Goldberg are Israeli; Bartov served in the Israeli army and changed his view during 2024.

The courtsWhat has and has not been ruled
ICJ
No ruling on the merits. In January 2024 the court ordered provisional measures, finding the rights claimed under the Convention plausible and the risk of irreparable harm real. That is not a finding that genocide occurred. Israel filed its counter-memorial in March 2026; in May 2026 the court ordered another round of written pleadings. Hearings are likely in late 2026 or 2027.
Warrants, but not for genocide. In November 2024 the court issued warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. It issued a third for Hamas commander Mohammed Deif, for the crimes of 7 October.
Much public argument proceeds as if “not genocide” meant “acceptable”. It does not. Extermination, persecution and the starvation of civilians carry the same sentences and need no proof of special intent.
The other sideWho disputes it, and on what grounds
The governments of Israel, the United States, Germany and others; organizations such as the AJC and ADL; historians and lawyers such as Jeffrey Herf and Norman Goda.
The core argument is intent. ICJ precedent requires that genocidal intent be the only reasonable inference from the conduct. Disputers point to evacuation warnings, aid that was admitted, Hamas fighting from among civilians, and the stated war aims of destroying Hamas and recovering the hostages.
Some distrust the UN Human Rights Council, which has a long record of disproportionate focus on Israel.
A middle camp holds that war crimes are likely but genocide is unproven.
The scale of death and destruction is less disputed than the legal label. Read the rebuttals: Israel’s filings are in the ICJ case file, and a representative critique of the scholars’ resolution is here.

Money on the accusing side, with numbers
Fair is fair. Here is who funds the other side, split into two groups that should not be mixed up: the people making the accusation, and the people funding Hamas.
Amnesty International: €370 million a yearRaised worldwide in 2023, for all its work in every country, not just this. Most of it comes from millions of small donors. It takes no government money for its research. Amnesty finances
Human Rights Watch: $77.7 million a yearLatest IRS filing, with $219 million in assets. Takes no government money. Its largest single gift was $100 million from George Soros in 2010. HRW financials · IRS filings
B’Tselem: about $2.5 million a yearRoughly 9 million shekels. Between 64% and 72% comes from foreign governments, mostly European: the EU, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, France. The Israeli government calls that foreign meddling. B’Tselem’s own donor list · NGO Monitor, a pro Israel watchdog

Al Jazeera: about 90% funded by QatarThe exact budget is secret. Qatar is a monarchy with its own interests, and it hosted the Hamas political office for years. Watch its coverage with that in mind, the same way you would watch any state funded outlet. AllSides
The UN bodiesFunded by member state dues, the United States being the largest payer. The Human Rights Council has passed more resolutions against Israel than against any other country, which is the bias charge in a nutshell.
And the money behind Hamas
Iran: $70 to $100 million a yearTo Hamas, by US and Israeli government estimates, plus weapons and training.
Qatar: $30 million a monthMore than $1.3 billion into Gaza since 2012, for salaries, fuel and poor families under the Hamas run government. It was sent with Israel’s approval, and Israeli reporting says the Netanyahu government asked Qatar to keep it flowing. CNN · Haaretz
Put the two sides next to each other. Add up the entire worldwide budgets of Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and B’Tselem, for every cause they work on, and you get about half a billion dollars a year. US military aid to Israel alone averaged about $11 billion a year over the last two. The money on the accusing side is real and you should know about it. It is also about one twentieth the size. And the groups with the biggest budgets, Amnesty and HRW, are paid the same whether they accuse Israel, Hamas, Russia or China, and they have accused all four.
None of this proves anyone is lying. It tells you who pays a price if the answer changes.
Those who dispute the label
Legal liability is the strongest. The Convention obliges states to prevent genocide, and complicity is itself a crime. A supplier government that conceded the label would be required by its own laws to halt arms transfers and would face lawsuits. Nicaragua has already taken Germany to the ICJ on this ground. For a government that keeps supplying arms, “it is not genocide” is the only position it can legally afford.
Arms. The United States gives Israel about $3.8 billion a year in military aid, most of it spent with American contractors, and supplies roughly two-thirds of Israel’s imported weapons. Germany is second.
Trade, technology and domestic politics. AIPAC’s super PAC spent over $100 million in the 2024 US election cycle.
Reasons that are not money are often larger: Germany’s Holocaust history; American strategic alliance; reluctance to strengthen legal theories that could be turned on American wars. Many officials and scholars dispute the label sincerely.
Those who make the accusation
NGOs raise funds on high-profile campaigns. Qatar and Iran fund sympathetic media and groups. South Africa’s governing party had domestic reasons for its case. Some UN bodies have a record of singling out Israel.
Is the United States compelled to side with Israel?
No. The constraint runs one way: if Washington keeps arming Israel, it must dispute the label. Nothing forces it to keep arming Israel; that choice is renewed by every administration and Congress. The US has broken with Israel before: Reagan in 1982, Bush in 1991, Obama in 2016, Biden’s paused bomb shipment in 2024. Its own NSM-20 report in 2024 found it reasonable to assess that American arms had been used inconsistently with humanitarian law, and the shipments continued.
A statement that needs no court: whatever is being done in Gaza is being done largely with American weapons and under American diplomatic cover, knowingly. That makes it an American question.
Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Law and conscienceMust we wait for a court?
In the past, the world has rarely waited for a court.
The Armenian genocide (1915) was never tried. Historians established it; the United States recognized it only in 2019 to 2021, delayed by politics, not evidence.
The Holocaust. Nuremberg convicted no one of “genocide”; the crime did not yet exist in law.
Srebrenica: ICJ ruling twelve years later. Cambodia: genocide convictions forty years later.
Darfur (2004), the Uyghurs (2021), the Rohingya (2022): the US government declared each a genocide with no court verdict.
The law itself does not require waiting. In Bosnia v. Serbia (2007) the ICJ held that a state’s duty to prevent genocide begins when it learns of a serious risk, not at a verdict. A rule that applied only after the killing ended would preserve no one.
A division of labour. Conviction of individuals belongs to courts alone, and should. The historical record belongs to investigators and historians. Arms policy, recognition and sanctions belong to the public and its representatives. A citizen deciding how to vote is judging a risk, not convicting a defendant.
And the other side of it. Courts still matter: for punishment, for reparations, and for a record that resists denial. The word is powerful because it has been kept narrow; those who insist that someone rigorous test the intent element are not all stalling.

It tracks party and age, and media diet: US broadcast coverage leads with official statements and gives NGO findings one news cycle, while Israel has barred independent foreign journalists from Gaza throughout the war. People who get news from social media have seen raw footage daily for nearly three years. Most people are also simply busy, and some who are well informed sincerely reject the label.
